The Leelanau Children's Center operates two primary program elements:

Center-based programs

Center-based preschool and toddler programs endeavor to help children maintain their characteristic zest for life and curiosity, while exposing children to experiences that will help them achieve optimal development. These objectives are achieved via play based full and part day programs delivered in our facilities in Leland and Northport.

Our center-based programs provide children with lots of opportunity to explore the world through play — we play inside, outside, in structured and informal settings. We provide places for contemplative play, social play, discovery play, active play and are always challenging ourselves to create experiences that support and nourish the children in our programs. We refer to our curriculum as a socially-based Constructivist program.

Parent Outreach

Our outreach program, Parenting Communities of Leelanau County, aspires to help parents be the parents they dream of being. Parenting Communities provides families with a menu of ways to meet other parents, explore their child's development, think about their own parenting, find other children and families to play with and find resources that will help them parent as they wish.

Assessment

LCC has recently completed the fall 2011 preschool classroom assessments using the research-based and validated assessment tool CLASS (Classroom Assessment Scoring System).

We are delighted to report that our three preschool classrooms in Leland and Northport score well above the regional and national average for quality of teaching (we are in blue on the chart). CLASS uses a 7-point scale with a low-range of 1-2 and a high range of 6-7.

Our classroom teachers will use this data to set their personal and classroom improvement goals, and our classrooms will be assessed again in the spring.
