![]() Summer ProgramsSchool Age Summer ProgramOur elementary program takes place at Leland Public School in our very non-school like classrooms - the “Cabin” and the “Cottage”. This program is for children grades kindergarten through third grade (children exiting kindergarten, children exiting third grade). We are exploring the possibility of expanding our summer program to include children exiting fourth grade. Please let us know if you are interested. School age kids explore beautiful Leelanau County with weekly field trips to all the great hot spots in the area; the Dunes, Conservancy and National Park trails, the mini golf course on the Crystal River, and local farms…just to name a few. School Age teaching staff is lifeguard-certified and take children to local beaches every afternoon. We plan to partner with the Old Art Building to provide access and scholarships for children enrolled in our program to attend their series of summer arts classes. In summers past, children explored questions about what makes Leelanau special in the summer. They interviewed visitors, charting where people came from, and what they liked to do while visiting. This year, we will continue visits to the villages and treasures of our county. The children will use art and a variety of documentation to describe what they notice during their excursions. Kids may even choose to participate in the local farmers market, making and selling lemonade to help pay for their field trips! Of course, there will be plenty of play time- at the beach, on the playground, and in the school. Elementary aged children must be enrolled for a minimum of three consecutive weeks, three full days per week. The school age ratio is 1 teacher for every 12 children. Preschool Summer Program Preschoolers have plenty of opportunities to play and enjoy the delights of summer. This program takes place in our lovely purpose-built preschool buildings in Leland and Northport and serves children aged 3 to kindergarten entry. The preschool focus is on social development, play, and fun. Preschoolers are bursting with curiosity about each other—they are interested in play, play, play; playing with each other and exploring materials. Children are fascinated with water – how it moves, how it flows, and how it falls, which in turn leads to discussions of what floats? This is how our curriculum unfolds, led by children’s interests, curiosity, questions, and environment and guided by the expertise and imagination of our creative teachers. Our preschoolers spend a lot of time working with teachers and our fabulous cook in our new gardens. Kids help plant, care for, and then harvest vegetables, flowers, and herbs. We look forward to expanding our gardens and extending children’s learning and enjoyment of the growing cycle. Families can choose part or full day (part day ends at 12:30) and either full week (Mon-Fri) or part week. Preschool children must be enrolled for three consecutive weeks and must attend a minimum of two or three part or full days per week (mon/tue or wed/thurs/fri). Preschoolers stay on site most of the time, with occasional adventures to local sights (local parks, strawberry picking, the beach). The preschool ratio is 1 teacher for every 7 children. Toddler Summer Program Our Toddler program is also located within the preschool buildings in Leland and Northport, where toddlers have their own toddler land. Toddlers will spend their days exploring both inside and out, digging in the sandbox, feeding the bunny, splashing in the water, singing and dancing, and building relationships with consistent, caring adults. Delights abound in our toddler-world; shrieks of joy and discovery one minute and sweet cozy lap-time with our magnificent staff the next, make for a program full of love and learning. Children must be one year old and walking to be developmentally ready for this program. This is the one summer program that requires that families sign up for the entire summer session. The program offers a full day option only. The toddler ratio is 2 teachers for every 7 children. Summer 2009 Brochure (adobe pdf) Previous Page |
