How we've grown

1976  –  Leelanau Children's Center incorporated under the name Leland Daycare and Nursery School under the direction of Elizabeth Glass and Molly Phinny

1985  –  adds a full day program

1988  –  inaugurates the current Leland facility, after a two-year capital campaign

1990's  –  creates an endowment. Four funds are established: John Simpson scholarship, Miss Sally staff development, Louetta Greeno building and grounds, Phinny-Glass special projects

1995  –  first Center in the county to become accredited by National Association for the Education of Young Children

1998 & 2002  –  recipient of the Governor's Award for Quality

2000  –  accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)

2002  –  first Center in the region to become accredited by Family Support America.

2003  –  receives a bequest from philanthropist Sally Reahard

2003  –  recognized as one of 21 exemplary early childhood programs in the U.S. for the Strengthening Families Through Early Care and Education project of the Center for the Study of Social Policy (funded by Doris Duke Foundation)

2006  –  adds a toddler classroom to the Leland Center and expands into Northport, offering a comprehensive early childhood program

2006  –  Parenting Communities outreach program awarded the State of Michigan Model Program of the year status by The Michigan Children’s Trust Fund

2008  –  Leelanau County Family Coordinating Council asked LCC to coordinate early childhood efforts countywide under the guidance of the Early Childhood Initiative.

2009  –  renovates the Northport facility to more fully comply with safety and best practices standards

2010  –  turns Beaver Island program over to Leland Public Schools

2011  –  dedicates Henry's House in Northport

2014  –  Leelanau Children's Center received 5 out of 5 stars rating by Michigan Department of Education’s Great Start to Quality
